The Eclipse Notebook

Twelve stories, one night, one small town. Everyone is looking at the sky; no one is looking at anyone else.

About the book

On the night of a lunar eclipse, twelve lives pass side by side in a small coastal town without touching: the pharmacist on night duty, a fisherman out of season, a couple spending their first night in a hotel, the only tea house open until morning.

The collection that won the Sait Faik Story Award is remembered less for its brevity than for the places where it says nothing.

From the book

“Looking at the sky together is not being together; it is only being silent in the same direction.”
p. 22
“In a small town everyone knows everyone; nobody knows anybody.”
p. 96

In the press

“A language that makes the voices at the margin audible without ever raising them.”

— Sait Faik Story Award, jury citation, 2019
